Herpetic stomatitis is a viral infection of the mouth that causes sores and ulcers. These mouth ulcers are not the same as canker sores, which are not caused by a virus.
Essentials of Diagnosis:-
• Common in children below 10 years.
• Severe ulceration of oral mucous membrane asso-
ciated with systemic signs, i.e. fever, lymphadeno- pathy (cervical) and malaise.
Treatment:-
-Local Idoxuridine application or 5 per cent Acyclovir cream (Zovirax).
-Oral Acyclovir 400-1000 mg/day for 12 months if frequent cold sores.
