When you smoke, you harm your ability to exercise performance in several ways.
Gym goers are often aware they need to have plenty of rest and eat healthy for optimal muscle growth and strength. You’ll often find them eating loads of eggs, nuts and meat. They also make they get sufficient amounts of sleep for their muscles to recover. There is an important factor that is often overlooked by gym rats: smoking. Not only does cigarette smoking compromise the health of your heart and lungs, it also diminishes muscle gains from exercise by acting on your body in several distinct ways. These are some of the effects of smoking which can hamper your performance.
Smoking causes shortness of breath:- When you smoke, you become breathless more quickly during workout. It elevates blood pressure and narrow blood vessels that transport oxygen.
Smoking makes your heart beat faster:- A smoker’s heart beats an average of 30 percent faster than that of a nonsmoker, which affects the outcome of your exercise in significant ways. because your heart is working harder to achieve adequate circulation, you use more energy during your workouts.
Smoking decreases appetite:- Smoking kills our appetite. Decrease in diet results in hampering of performance during the workout.
Reduced blood flow:- The nicotine and carbon monoxide from smoking may make your blood sticky and your arteries may become narrow. Narrow arteries reduce the flow of blood to your heart, muscles a nd other body organs, making exercise harder. During exercise, blood flow helps boost oxygen supply to your muscles. If your muscles don’t get oxygen fast enough, your body can’t work as well.
Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis.
